As I am planning my brothers and I's graduation for Sunday, I've had to come up with my favorite hymn (I've asked my cousin to sing). I had a bunch, but narrowed it down to "Come Thou Fount." After thinking of the song, I realized that every time I sing it and get to the part where it says "Ebenezer," I think of Ebenezer Scrooge! Now, I know that there is no way the Bible is actually talking about that there! I just had to look it up.
What I found was that the meaning of Ebenezer actually means "Stone of help." In 1 Samuel, when Samuel was appointed the new Judge/ priest, Israel repented of all the wickedness and disobedience they had been doing for many years. After that, Samuel placed a big stone in between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshana. He named it Ebenezer--"The Stone of Help"--For he said, "Up to this point the Lord has helped us!" (1 Samel 7:12)
After knowing the real meaning, this song will have so much more meaning to me because I know that I can always count on God to be there-- knowing that He does not help; He IS my Help!
That is my random thought of the day. Ha Ha!
Cool ~ good job digging in to find out :)
